Happy NYE & Reflections on Game Night

I’m not typically big on reflecting, yet thought I’d step out of character & try one…

HAPPY NEW YEAR Everyone 🤩

I hope all are having a fun, safe & drama-free holiday season! I’m not typically big on reflecting, yet thought I’d step out of character & try one…

I’m so very GRATEFUL for this fab community we’ve built up over the past several years and thankful for your commitment to show up IRL & your help in building a fun, supportive & inclusive village around our shared hobby 🙏🏽

It’s been fantastic to meet so many new folks and a privilege to become friends with so many regulars. I absolutely love looking around on any given game night & seeing so many people smiling & enjoying each other’s company 🥰

Since our little club relaunched in 2018 at The Game Parlour, we’ve been gathering ’round the table nearly every Monday for literal fun & game, so let me also express gratitude to Brian, Benson & the GP staff for serving as our HQ and supporting our shared endeavor.

Finally, many/many thanks to all of our hosts – both regular & adhoc – for recommending/teaching games & welcoming people around your table.

What’s Next for The EGL?

  • Monday game nights continue, with the goal of growing our events to regularly accommodate ~50 guests. We’re actively seeking to grow our club & bring these fun times to more people, so please help spread the word, invite friends, etc!
  • We’ll continue to host periodic pop-up events (as with SFGo club & Lore); if you know of any business or event spaces that might be good partners for our events, please let us know!
  • JUNE 6 (Sat) we plan to host another International Tabletop Day event 🎲
  • JULY 2026 will be EGLs 15th anniversary! The very first EGL gathering happened in summer 2011, hosted by our founder Gordon W at his church’s community room in Duboce Triangle. We’re planning to host an anniversary party in July or August to mark the occasion!

We are actively seeking out event spaces in & around SF to host Tabletop Day & our 15th Anniversary event (to accommodate 70-100 people) so if you have any recommendations please let us know!

What would you like to see?

Finally, where would you like to see this community go/grow? If you have ideas/recs about “what next?” for our little club please reach out via email or find us on discord!

Monday Game Nights in SF

San Francisco’s Euro Gaming League (EGL) hosts weekly game nights, open to the public, on Mondays in San Francisco at a public venue in the inner Sunset.

The EGL is a board game club of fun, easygoing folks who get together to build community through tabletop board & card games. We love welcoming new people to the hobby & our events!

How to Attend Game Nights

Join the EGL’s events page on HEYLO to see our events & RSVP. You are also welcome to join us on Discord to stay abreast of events, ask questions, etc!

What to Expect at Game Night

Time

Monday game nights run from 6 – 10pm. Different tables may start games at different times but generally everyone will be engaged in a game by 6:15pm so it’s best to be prompt, otherwise you may have to wait around for the second round of games 😕

If you’re new to our game nights, we strongly advise arriving 10 minutes early (parking can be challenging so please plan accordingly) so you can be helped by one of our hosts before things get busy, particularly if you are new to games.

Finally, an RSVP is required to attend, as there’s often a waitlist. We may start admitting folks from the waitlist by ~6:10pm, so late attendees may have their spot given away; for this and the above reasons, please try your best to be prompt.

Cost

There’s no fee to attend Monday game nights, although our regular venue does charge a $7 cover (as of Dec 2025); if that’s an obstacle, we may be able to help.

Food/Drink

Since our venue is a game cafe, outside food & drink (other than water) aren’t allowed. Folks give the fare at The Game Parlour rave reviews, however!

What Games do we Play?

We generally have ~40 guests attending any given Monday game night, distributed among 9+ tables. We have a group of “table hosts” who are well-versed in teaching both classic & modern board games and will be more than happy to introduce you to both our games & people.

We pride ourselves on ensuring folks end up in a game of their preferred complexity level, i.e. that no one is “thrown into the deep end” of strategy games. See the FAQ for more information.

Nervous?

We get it! Showing up to an event for the first time – especially where everyone seems to know everyone else – can be nerve-wracking 😟 … but we hope you’ll give it a shot!

We are always happy for new players to join, as we enjoy building a fun community for folk of all sorts. If you have never played “modern” board games before, just ask someone to direct you to an EGL host, who can guide you into a game of your comfort level from our extensive games library!

Come solo or come with friends – either way you’ll find us to be a warm, welcoming group 😍

Want to host a game?

Folks are welcome to “pitch” a game to the crowd & gauge interest. We do recommend to attend a few game nights before offering up games to get familiar with the crowd & vibe. Additionally we ask everyone who’d like to host a table first review & agree to our “run a game” guidelines.

Can I bring my prototype/unreleased game?

We have had folks bring their in-development games to share & garner feedback. We’re currently formalizing policies for this type of sharing which we expecto to publish in early 2026. In the meantime, please reach out if you’d like to host a table with a yet-to-be-released game.

EGL leaves Meetup – stay connected

Hello SF gamers & friends! We’re moving off Meetup! Here’s how you can stay connected.

After 10+ amazing years on Meetup, we’re moving all EGL events to Heylo. To keep getting invites, RSVP to events, and join our game nights, you’ll need to follow us there.

This will be the last update we send through Meetup, so be sure to join us on Heylo to stay in the loop!

Can’t use Heylo? Here are other ways to stay connected:

We’re excited about this new chapter and want to make sure you’re still part of the community. This is the last email we’ll send via Meetup, so be sure to join us on Heylo to keep up with all the fun!

We look forward to seeing you around the table soon!

Cheers,
The EGL Team

Upcoming highlights for The EGL:

RSVP & Attendance Policy (July 2025)

Hello members! We’re effecting some changes to our RSVP & Attendance policy effective July 2025.

As noted in the past, we’ve had issues with members responding “YES” to the event RSVP, yet not showing up; this leaves folks on the wait list (it’s not uncommon that 15+ people are on the wait list for any given Monday!) out in the cold 🙁

Due to limited space at the venue & the consistent waiting list, we kindly request your cooperation in ensuring that those who want to attend our EGL game nights are able to do so.

The new problem is that many members have been changing their RSVP to “no” in the few hours (or even minutes!) before an event starts – although this technically meets our original RSVP requirements & bumps folks off the wait list, realistically these members don’t have sufficient notice to attend – and we again end up with empty seats that could otherwise have been used.

To that end, effective July 2025 we are implementing the following attendance policy:

  • Members who have RSVPd “yes” to events but can not attend must update their RSVP by noon on the day of the event, at the latest.
  • Those changing their RSVP to “no” after that time will be treated as a NO-SHOW and subject to the original warning/banning policy.

The prior RSVP & attendance policy does still remain in effect, specifically:

  • Members who RSVP “yes” but do not attend (NO-SHOW) will receive -1 point
  • Members who reach -2 points will receive a warning, and those who reach -3 points may be banned from the group.

We understand that emergencies happen & sometimes one is forced to bail at the last minute – if that’s the case with you, you’re welcome to ping the team on discord or via email info@sfegl.com to make your case.

Please ensure you check in with the host upon arrival at future events, so that your attendance can be marked. Please do your best not to be a…

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

RSVP Attendance Policy

Hi members! There have been some concerns regarding RSVPs & attendance at our events.

Unfortunately in the recent past we’ve had members who responded “YES” to the event RSVP not showing up; this leaves folks on the wait list (typically 8-10 more people on said list!) out in the cold 🙁

Due to limited space at the venue & the consistent waiting list, we kindly request your cooperation in ensuring that those who want to attend our EGL game nights are able to do so.

To that end, effective Jan 2025 we have implemented the following attendance policy:

  • Members who RSVP but do not attend (no-show) will receive -1 point
  • Members who consistently no-show to events may be banned from the group

For example, if Johnny RSVPs for 3 events but only attends 1, Johnny’s gonna receive -1 point.

Members who reach -2 points will receive a warning, and those who reach -3 points may be banned from the group.

Hosting a large game gathering takes a lot of planning & effort – so please be courteous, help hosts with our planning and cancel your RSVP if you can’t make it.

Life happens! Plans can change or perhaps you realize you may be sick at the last minute; the polite/responsible thing to do is let your hosts know ASAP, allowing folks on the waitlist a chance to join the event.

If you need to cancel for whatever reason, cancel your RSVP on our event platform ASAP, ideally at least 6 hours before the event.

Finally, we understand it’s often not easy to go to a new place full of strangers, but our group does our best to be open, welcoming & provide a safe space at our game night events.

Please ensure you check in with the host upon arrival at all events, so that your attendance can be tallied.

Thank you for your understanding & cooperation.

Monday game nights – RSVP policy

Hi folks – this is a gentle reminder – IF you are attending a Monday game night with EGL – to please ensure you RSVP for the event via the our events RSVP page.

Further, if you have RSVP’d yes but find you can’t attend, please PLEASE change your response to a NO so that folks on the waitlist can attend.

Thankfully, game nights have become very popular (yay!), so much so that we’ve regularly got a full house. However, we are limited by the amount of table space available at the venue, hence the cap on attendees.

We’d love to see you around the table and don’t wish to turn anyone away … but in the interest of equity – if the venue is full on a given night and there’s limited seats – then please understand that we have to give precedence to guests who a) have a “yes” RSVP and b) are present within 15m of the event start time.

As ever, if you have any questions or concerns, contact our team here.

Board games Mondays with the EGL

Hi, folks! A reminder that the EGL (euro-gaming league) gathers weekly to play euro & other types of board games at the Game Parlour, 6pm every Monday. If you haven’t come out in a while, we’d love to see you again!

Our group is always welcoming to new folks, whether experienced board gamers or not. No need to bring any games, nor spend a half hour reading rules … the Game Parlour has a huge library of board games and our members are always happy to recommend and teach a variety of games!

Remember that our focus is on building community while introducing folks to the modern breed of fun, engaging games (‘not your father’s Monopoly’), so we hope you’ll join us any given Monday for a night full of fun games & fab people =)
